Dopiero pierwszy etap ABSA Cape Epic, a już mamy pierwsze dramaty. Partner Nino Schurtera – Mathias Stirenemann z problemami żołądkowymi ledwo dotarł do mety, a w konsekwencji oznacza wycofanie się tej dwójki z rywalizacji. Jak napisał Nino na swoim fb: „To tylko wyścig”. Co prawda Mistrz Świata stanął na starcie trzeciego etapu, ale nie będzie już klasyfikowany, jedzie „for fun”.
Z rywalizacji musiała się wycofać także Ester Suss, której partnerka Angelika Tazreiter doznała kontuzji ramienia i nie mogła kontynuować rywalizacji.
Na „zamieszaniu” skorzystali zawodnicy Cannondale Factory Racing oraz Investec Songo Specialized, którzy o zwycięstwie etapowym zdecydowali na finiszu. O ile Kulhavy walczył do końca, o tyle jego partner Howard Grotts nie dał rady nawiązać walkę. Tym samym na starcie drugiego etapu w koszulkach lidera stanęli Manuel Fumic oraz Henrique Avancini.
W rywalizacji kobiet mimo defektu ponownie na najwyższym stopniu podium stanęły Annika Langvad oraz Kate Courtney czyli Investec Songo Specialized.
